v5n6 From the Editors

By Susan Stipp, David Vaughan, and Hap McSween | December, 2009

Elements closes its fifth year of publication with this issue. In 2009, we published 39 thematic articles, contributed by 80 authors from 11 countries. Triple Point and Parting Shots, written by two of the founding principal editors, both reflect on the accomplishments and challenges of these first five years. We have now covered 29 topics in the Earth sciences; our lineup is complete till the middle of 2011, and we have many proposals on hand. Please check the preview on the next two pages to get a taste of the exciting topics we are going to cover in 2010. We hope there will be some thing for everyone in this mix of review and leading-edge coverage of science.

One angle that is not covered in this issue, however, is the environmental impact of extracting a few grams of gold from a ton of rock and disposing safely of the resulting huge quantities of waste. To be fair, the topic of mine wastes would deserve a whole issue, and we hope to add this theme to our lineup in the near future. Proposals on this topic would therefore be viewed favorably by the editors.

v5n4 From the Editors

By Prof . Dr . Jörg Matschullat, Terri Bowers, Pierrette Tremblay | August, 2009

On Saturday June 21, the editors met, along with the Chair of the Executive Committee, in Davos, Switzerland. Even though we exchange countless emails and have regular conference calls, this yearly face to face meeting is extremely valuable. The meeting was very productive, and so was the joint meeting of the editors and members of the Executive Committee at the end of the day. An informal lunchtime gathering of the editors with members of the Advisory Board, members of the Executive Committee, and presidents of societies was also held on June 24.

Geo Science World (www.geoscienceworld. org) is an aggregate of society run Earth science journals. Since its launch in 2005, it has experienced a steady growth in its number of subscribers and the number of journals it hosts. Elements became part of Geo Science World in December 2007. Royalties paid to publishers are based on both content and usage.

v5n2 From the Editors

We say a reluctant farewell to Bruce Watson as Principal Editor. He joined the team in 2006 as the fourth in the Elements editorial family, and he was the first replacement of the original team that got the journal started. Bruce has been instrumental in establishing the way of doing things that is becoming tradition, as Elements moved from hatchling to full fledged flight. He made time out of an overfull schedule to accomplish his Elements tasks, and he was noted for his genuine interest in people. He contributed wise insight, good ideas, and thoughtful solutions, as well as hard work and diplomacy. Many of his editorials also struck a chord among our community. The journal benefited from his wide range of contacts. Bruce was in charge of the following issues: Moon (v5n1), Platinum Group Elements (v4n4), Deep Earth (v4n3), Medical Mineralogy (v3n6), The Nuclear Fuel Cycle (v2n6), and Glasses and Melts (v2n5). He also nurtured several issues that will appear in the coming years. The editorial team will sincerely miss him. Thanks Bruce!

v5n1 From the Editors

By E. Bruce Watson, Alina kabata-Pendias, Javier Cuadros | February, 2009

For the first time since June 2006, this issue of Elements takes us off the Earth for an up to the minute look at our nearest neighbor in the solar system. Guest editor John Delano and his team of authors provide an exciting perspective on the Moon that addresses both old controversies and new interpretations.
